Jason McGilligan and the Big Beat Videos

January 19, 2010

Hello all,

Just thought I’d share some great videos taken recently of me playing with the band, the Big Beat in support of Ireland’s most promising up-and-coming country star, Jason McGilligan. Many thanks to Mark Hill for the great videos, he did a great job with them and we hope to have many more in future of the same high quality.

Recording – 11th Aug

Band – Stephen McCorry Band
Location – Queens University Studios

Today I’m looking back with pride at a great recording session yesterday evening. An old friend of mine, Stephen McCorry, put together a band to record a number of original tracks that he has written over the last couple of years. I’ve always enjoyed his songs, they’re quite soulful and the lyrics are full of meaning and very well written. When he gave me a call to see if I would record bass for the session, I literally jumped at the chance to help him out!

For the session, I brought along my Bravewood Jazz, and played through a Hartke A100 amp. The recording was all done live, with the instruments and drums mic’ed with a few AKG condensers. After a few practice takes to make sure that all the levels were OK, we were off, and in the space of a few hours we managed to get three full songs recorded. I was very impressed with the sound of the recordings when we listened to them afterwards, and will certainly be uploading a few to this site whenever I get my hands on them! A lot of the endings and middle sections were improvised, which is the beauty of live recording. It really does give you that extra ‘feel’ that multi-track recording largely lacks.

Anywho – stay tuned for some mp3 uploads quite soon, and thanks for reading!

Danny
